Lee Morrow, MD, who serves as the Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine, and Ryan Walters, PhD, who serves as the primary statistician within the Division of CRES, have developed a mentorship model of research to increase scholarly activity within the Department of Medicine. This mentorship model is applicable to all junior faculty, fellow, resident, and student research projects and serves to ensure that the study has been properly vetted and that both the mentor and mentee are actively engaged in the project.

Prior to meeting directly with Ryan Walters, PhD, the steps listed below must be completed. Note that Step 2 can be ignored by faculty who are Associate Professors or Professors.

1) Identify a research question for your project.
2) Identify a mentor to collaborate on your project.
3) Determine whether data are available to answer your research question.
4) Download and complete the Study Proposal Form for the Division of CRES.
5) Submit the completed Study Proposal Form to Ryan Walters, PhD.

Once the completed Study Proposal Form has been received, Ryan Walters, PhD will contact both the mentee and mentor directly to set up a time to meet. Following the mentorship model, it is required that both the mentee and mentor attend all face-to-face meetings. No exceptions.

Meetings can be expected to occur within two weeks of receiving the completed Study Proposal Form. Projects will be queued in the order they are received. Projects with unrealistic timelines or projects with questionable scientific rigor will be denied. It is in your best interest to complete the Study Proposal Form well before your project deadline to ensure a quality deliverable.
