Excitement! Why?

  • AIDS and HIV
  • Hepatitis C: its cause and cure
  • Helicobacter pylori and its role in ulcers
  • Borrelia burgdorferi as the cause of Lyme disease
  • Escherichia coli O157:H7 and bloody diarrhea
  • SARS
  • Arrival in the US of West Nile Virus, Ebola, and Zika
  • 2009 pandemic influenza

Every item on this list is a development in infectious diseases that has transpired since the founding of Creighton's infectious diseases division just over 40 years ago- and a reason why infectious diseases is arguably the most dynamic, exciting field in medicine.

...and more reasons why ID careers are exciting: Our division's faculty includes---

  • A winner of the medical school's Young Investigator Award with nearly two decades of commitment to statewide biopreparedness education who is chief of our VA affiliate's medicine service and who donated half his liver to another physician.
  • A teacher whose recognition extends beyond multiple teaching award nominations to being featured in over 150 website, newspaper, radio, and television appearances (for one, Google "California psychics" and "epidemiologist") and who earned a master's degree in epidemiology 24 years after receiving his M.D., is Deputy Chief of Staff at our VA affiliate, accompanied medical students on over a score of service trips to Latin America, and received the Laureate Award from the Nebraska Chapter of the American College of Physicians as well as the Distinguished Service to Medicine Award from the Metro Omaha Medical Society.
  • A leader in an antimicrobial stewardship program that saved our teaching hospitals millions of dollars who is perhaps the youngest faculty member to receive Creighton's Master Clinician Award and whose leadership has been recognized with an appointment as Assistant Dean for Strategy and Accreditation.
  • A recently appointed faculty member whose work with telehealth antimicrobial stewardship led him to trademark "MDStewardship".
  • The most recent faculty additions include a physician with a decade of experience in a fast tempo private practice setting, a physician with transplant ID training, and a physician whose ID training was built on a foundation of years as a hospitalist.
