GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR ANESTHESIA ROTATION
GOAL: By the end of the month of the Anesthesia Rotation, the Family Medicine Resident will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of Anesthesia and Airway Management.

OBJECTIVES:
1. Patient Care:
The Family Medicine resident will be able to:
- - Identify pertinent positives and negatives when interviewing.
- - Complete an accurate and thorough exam.
- - Develop and present an appropriate assessment and plan.
2. Medical Knowledge:
The Family Medicine resident will be able to describe:
- - Preanesthetic patient evaluation
- - Anesthetic planning for a various surgical procedures.
- - Management of the airway - use of skills and equipment to ensure airway patency and ventilation of patient.
- - Intraoperative anesthetic management and anesthetic pharmacology (including understanding the basic pharmacologic principles regarding the utilization of intravenous induction agents, neuromuscular blockers, local anesthetics, volatile anesthetic agents, and vasoactive medications.)
- - Postoperative anesthetic management such as pain control and prevention/treatment of nausea and vomiting.
The Family Medicine Resident will perform the following procedures:
- - Endotracheal intubation and placement of laryngeal mask airways.
- - Perform appropriate bag-mask ventilation on patients.
3. Interpersonal and Communication Skills
The Family Medicine Resident will:
- Counsel and educate patients and families on pertinent medical and psychosocial issues, such as pain control, reasons for arterial and central venous lines, the possibility of time in ICU, etc.
- Provide information using effective and legible writing skills.
4. Professionalism
The Family Medicine Resident will:
- Demonstrate respect to nursing staff, medical students, residents, attendings and other members of the healthcare team.
- Return pages in a timely manner.
- Complete duties as expected.
- Be respectful of the patients’ culture, age, gender, sexual orientation and disability.
- Be punctual and available for required duties.
