General Surgery Inpatient

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR SURGERY INPATIENT ROTATION

 GOAL: By the end of the Surgery Inpatient Rotation, the Family Medicine Resident will have basic knowledge of perioperative and postoperative care of general surgery patients.  In addition, the Family Medicine Resident will have assisted with the surgery of common surgical conditions diagnosed at a Family Medicine Clinic.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Patient Care:

The Family Medicine resident will be able to:

  • - Identify pertinent positives and negatives when interviewing.
  • - Complete an accurate and targeted exam.
  • - Develop a complete differential diagnosis
  • - Present an appropriate assessment and plan.

 2.  Medical Knowledge:

The Family Medicine resident will be able to describe:

  • - The perioperative management and postoperative management of Diabetes Mellitus.
  • - The perioperative management of:
  • - Bacterial nndocarditis
  • - Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • - GI Bleed
  • - The postoperative management of:
  • - Fluid and Electrolytes
  • - Pulmonary Care
  • - Gastrointestinal Care (NPO, Opioid use, Nasogastric tube management)
  • - Pain Management
  • - Post Surgical Wound Care

The Family Medicine Resident will scrub in and assist at the following surgeries:

  • - Acute Cholecystectomy
  • - Appendectomy
  • - Bariatric Surgery
  • - Bowel Obstruction
  • - Breast Biopsy
  • - Colonoscopy
  • - EGD
  • - Inguinal Hernia Repair

 The Family Medicine Resident will perform the following procedures:

  • - Central Line Placement
  • - Laceration Repair
  • - Staple Removal
  • - Suture Removal

3. Interpersonal and Communication Skills

 The Family Medicine Resident will:

-         Counsel and educate patients and families on pertinent medical and psychosocial issues.
-         Provide information using legible writing skills.

4.  Professionalism

 The Family Medicine Resident will:

-         Demonstrate respect to nursing staff, medical students, residents, attendings and other members of the healthcare team.
-         Return pages in a timely manner.
-         Complete duties as expected.
-         Be respectful of patient’s culture, age, gender, sexual orientation, and disability. 
-         Be punctual and available for required duties.
