Last year we piloted a program to use handheld devices in the hospitals during the clerkships.  We have further refined the program based on the previous class’s comments and are recommending a different device that promises to be more effective and versatile.
The device we are now recommending is the Apple iPod Touch.  (An iPhone would work also but because that entails signing a contract and a monthly bill, we didn’t feel we could make that recommendation.)
The benefits we see in making this change are as follows;

  • The iTouch is more versatile and can be used for other functions besides use in the hospital.  It can do everything previous handheld devices could do …and more.
  • There are many Medical applications available in the App Store.
  • The applications most highly recommended by those you will be working with work more smoothly on the iTouch.
  • Due to the hospital’s efforts to improve their wireless network, there is now a stronger, more reliable and more available signal in the hospital.

We will be assisting in the set up of these devices on the Creighton network during your orientation.  You will also find links on this site to tip sheets explaining how to connect to your e-mail and how to download software applications.    If you have any troubles, questions, concerns or suggestions, please let us know.
