American Society of Hematology

The Minority Medical Student Award Program (MMSAP) provides funding to engage minority medical students in the study of hematology through a mentor guided research experience. Research projects can be either clinical or laboratory-based.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute

Roswell Park Cancer Institute is offering two summer research opportunities. The Roswell Park Summer Fellowship Program offers the opportunity to conduct mentored, NIH-funded research in a lab at the University of Buffalo or Roswell Park Cancer Center. Fellows will design and carry out independent research in infectious diseases, microbiology and/or immunology.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute

The Summer Medical Fellows Program is primarily aimed at students who wish to use the summer research experience to explore continuing research through a year-long research training program. Awardees will undertake a basic, translational or applied biomedical research project. 

University of Maryland School of Medicine

The purpose of the Summer Program in Obesity, Diabetes and Nutrition Research Training (SPORT) is to inspire passion for research in diabetes, obesity and nutrition. It provides a mentored summer research experience and ongoing career, academic, research and clinical mentoring throughout medical school, with the ultimate goal of preparing participants for placement in competitive residency training programs leading to careers as independent physician scientists. 

HIV Vaccine Trials Network

The HIV Vaccine Trials Network is seeking African-American and Latino/a medical students interested in exploring a future career in HIV vaccine development research to participate in their HVTN Research and Mentorship Program. Grant recipients will work under the mentorship of HVTN-affiliated investigators to conduct research.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

The Medical Student Summer Fellowship Research Program is offered to medical students who have completed their first or second year of medical school and who have a career interest as a physician-scientist in the oncology field and/or related biomedical sciences. Students will conduct basic laboratory or clinical research.

The New York Academy of Medicine

The David E. Rogers Fellowship Program enriches the educational experiences of medical students through projects that bear on medicine as they contribute to the health of communities and address the needs of underserved or disadvantaged patients and populations. The content of the Rogers Fellowship might include clinical investigation, public health/epidemiology, health policy analysis, activities linking biomedicine, the social infrastructure and human or community need. 

Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research

The Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship program provides medical students a research experience within an academic anesthesiology department. Students participate in research and training activities as well as clinical anesthesia activities. 

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

The First-Year Medical Student Program is for students who have completed their first year of medical school and are interested in biomedical, translational or clinical research. Program trainees will be given the opportunity to acquire research skills, and through participation in institutional seminars and lectures, receive information that will be valuable in assessing career goals related to research and patient care in oncology. 

American Federation for Aging Research

The Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) Program provides an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics, with the mentorship of top experts in the field. Students participate in a structured research, clinical and didactic program in geriatrics.

Siteman Cancer Center - Barnes-Jewish Hospital Washington University School of Medicine

The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center provides students the opportunity to participate in the Leah Menshouse Springer Summer Opportunities Program. The program is designed to provide students with hands-on cancer research experience.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

The Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) program offers a unique opportunity for medical students to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. All applicants must have prior research experience. The POE program provides a short-term training experience in either laboratory research or clinical research.

NIDDK Medical Student Research Program In Diabetes and Obesity 2016

The Medical Student Research Program in Diabetes allows medical students to conduct research under the direction of an established scientist in the areas of diabetes, hormone action, physiology, islet cell biology or obesity at an institution with one of the NIDDK-funded Research Centers. 

Johns Hopkins Medicine-CUPID Summer Fellowship

The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at John Hopkins will sponsor a summer fellowship for medical students: Cancer in the Under-Privileged, Indigent, or Disadvantaged – The Summer Translational Oncology Program at John Hopkins (CUPID). The CUPID program is for medical students who have demonstrated interest in caring for underserved populations and who are exploring careers in oncology. Upon completing the initial registration, students will be given a link to send to their referees to upload recommendation letters. Students should register as early as possible.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, OH)

The Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) in the Research Institute at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital hosts the annual National Injury Research Program for Medical Students in the summer of 2016. The goal of this program is to provide research training to future physician-investigators while introducing them to the field of injury research and prevention. 

Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Vanderbilt University is accepting applications for its Student Research Training Program in Diabetes and Obesity, Kidney Disease and Digestive Disease. The SRTP allows medical students to conduct obesity-related research, kidney and hypertension-related research and digestive disease-related research with a diverse group of established investigators and clinicians to gain an improved understanding of research and career opportunities in biomedical research. 

Association of Academic Physiatrists

The Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship (MSSCE) program has been developed for medical students with a strong desire for clinical experience in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. This program aims to provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient clinical exposure and allows the student to explore the human side of patient care and the psychosocial environments patients face. 

Carolinas Healthcare System

The Cannon Summer Scholars Program hosted by Carolinas HealthCare System is a program of instruction in research. Summer Scholars work closely with mentors who are performing original research in the clinics or laboratories of Carolinas HealthCare System. Opportunities include original bench research in medically related disciplines such as biochemistry, cell biology, clinical trials, molecular biology, outcomes research, physiology, proteomics and others. 

Oregon Health & Science University

The Oregon Health & Science University is now excepting applications for the Campagna Scholarship, which supports a 10-week summer semester of research under the supervision of a neurosurgical mentor at Oregon Health & Science University. 

Case Western Reserve University SOM

The Heart, Lung and Blood (HLB) Diversity Summer Research Program is designed for students who belong to groups underrepresented in biomedical sciences. The program will engage students in state-of-the art biomedical research in cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematological and sleep disorders research.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute

The Medical Research Fellows Program enables students to be immersed in a high-impact, intensive research experience at a critical time in their professional education, before making plans for residency. Unique aspects of the program include national and regional professional development activities, mentorship by physician-scientists, interaction with HHMI investigators, and integration into a community of like-minded peers. Each student selects and works with a mentor to develop a basic, translational or applied biomedical research proposal.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation International Clinical Research Fellowship Program allows medical students to conduct clinical research abroad under the direction of a mentor working in global health. The one-year fellowships are administered by six medical schools with experience in global health research. Students do not need to be matriculated at one of the six schools to be eligible to apply.

NIH Medical Research Scholars Program

The NIH Medical Research Scholars Program is a comprehensive, yearlong research enrichment program that allows student scholars to engage in a closely mentored basic, clinical or translational research project on the main NIH campus in Bethesda or nearby NIH facilities. 

Kaiser Permanente

The Department of Pediatrics at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Oakland, California is offering several training opportunities in clinical pediatrics for fourth-year medical students. Students will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing clinical and educational activities.

University of Iowa 

The University of Iowa Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation is accepting applications for the Jackson-Steindler Orthopaedic Clerkship. Awardees will participate in clinical services and educational programs including conferences and surgical skills education, as well as have the opportunity to participate in research conferences. 

Boston Medical Center-Minority Physician Recruitment Office

The Subsidized Visiting Elective Program provides support for under-represented minority medical students to gain clinical exposure in the form of a month-long elective at Boston Medical Center with the goal of increasing the student’s consideration of the academic residency programs offered at the Boston University Medical Center. Accepted applicants will be provided housing and travel and application processing fee reimbursement. 

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center offers clinical electives to students who will be in their final 12 months of medical school at the start of their Memorial Hospital electives. Applications for electives beginning in July, August and September cannot be submitted until April 1. Thereafter, applications cannot be submitted more than six months prior to the start of the elective. Decisions are made on a rolling basis. All required materials must be submitted no later than two months (60 days) prior to the start of an elective.

Harvard Medical School-Office for Diversity and Community Partnership

The Visiting Clerkship Program provides support for fourth-year minority medical students to participate in the Harvard Medical School Exchange Clerkship Program. The program was designed to increase awareness of opportunities in academic medicine, increase consideration of academic training programs for internship and residency and increase the number of minority students applying to HMS-affiliated hospital training programs.
