American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation

The 2010 AMA Foundation Leadership Award applications are currently being accepted until November 16, 2009.  A program of the Excellence in Medicine Awards, the Leadership Awards are presented in collaboration with the AMA Sections and Special Groups, in association with Pfizer Inc.  Award recipients receive travel expenses to Washington D.C., February 28-March 3, 2010, for special leadership training, the Excellence in Medicine Awards banquet, and the AMA National Advocacy Conference.

The AMA is accepting applications until December 11, 2009 for the Seed Grant Research Grant Program.  Grants of $2,500 will help young investigators conduct basic science or clinical research projects in the following four categories:  Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Disease, HIV/AIDS, Leukemia and Neoplastic Diseases.  Recipients will be announced in March 2010.

Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program

This Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program offers a one-year clinical research training experience to advance standing students at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in developing countries throughout Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean.  The deadline to apply for the program is December 3, 2009.

Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation

The Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers medical students the opportunity to spend a year conducting intensive work in a biomedical research laboratory located in the U.S.  Applicants may or may not have prior research experience.  Dr. Tom Pisarri, Component 2 Director, has sponsored an award recipient in the past and can answer questions you may have about the program.  The application deadline is January 6, 2010.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology

The Medical Student Rotation provides 8-to-10 week clinical or clinical research oncology rotations for medical students from underrepresented populations.  The oncology rotation can take place in a clinical or clinical research setting at the applicant's home institution or at another institution that has agreed to host program participants.  The application must be postmarked by Janaury 7, 2010.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)

The HHMI-NIH Research Scholars Program (Cloister Program) enables medical, dental and veterinary students to spend 9 to 12 months conducting basic, translational, or applied biomedical research in one of the many laboratories on the NIH campus, Bethesda Maryland.  Novel aspects of this program include housing for all scholars together on the NIH campus, and student selection of preceptor and research project.  On-line applications must be submitted by January 10, 2010.

The HHMI Research Training Fellowships for Medical Students Program enables medical, dental and veterinary students to spend a year conducting basic, translational, or applied biomedical research at any school or nonprofit research institution in the United States, except at the NIH in Bethesda, MD.  On-line applications must be submitted by January 11, 2010.

American Pediatric Society (APS) & Society for Pediatric Research (SPR)

The APS and SPR are offering a medical student research program to encourage gifted medical students to consider careers in research related to pediatrics.  This program is specifically designed for students seeking a research opportunity at an institution other than their own Medical School.  Completed applications must be received by January 22, 2010.

Alpha Omega Alpha

The Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowships provide research support for clinical investigation, basic laboratory research, epidemiology, or social science/health services research.  Only one candidate from each school may be nominated.  Proposals must be submitted to the councilor, Dr. William Hunter, by December 31, 2009.

The Helen H. Glaser Student Essay awards were instituted to encourage medical students to write creative narratives or scholarly essays relevent to medicine.  The essays may be on any nontechnical subject related to medicine, including ethics, history, education, philosophy and policy.  Applications must be postmarked by January 31, 2010.

The Pharos Poetry Competition encourages medical students to write effective poetry using imagery and rhythm or rhyme to structure a poem.  The poem must be written while the student is in medical school, must be the work of a single author, and must represent original work.  Entries must be postmarked by January 31, 2010.

The Medical Student Service Project Award is given to aid the establishment of a medical student service project benefiting the medical school or the local community, and to recognize students who dedicate their time and effort to these endeavors.  The initial application must be for new projects with the potential to generate future support from the medical school or other sources.  Only one proposal can be submitted per medical school.  The due date for submission to the counselor, Dr. William Hunter, will be posted later in November.

O.C. Hubert Student Fellowship in International Health

The O.C. Hubert Student Fellowship in International Health provides opportunities for third- and fourth-year medical students to gain public health experience in an international setting.  Hubert fellows spend four to twelve weeks in a developing country working on a priority health problem alongside field teams from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.  Applications will be posted in late January with a submission deadline in late February.

AMA Foundation-Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship

The American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation in association with the AMA Women Physicians Congress (WPC) has established the Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship Fund with the goal of advancing the progress of women in the medical profession and strengthening the ability of the AMA to identify and address the needs of women physicians and medical students.  Applications are due February 15, 2010.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute

The Summer Oncology Research Program at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute offers state-of-the-art clinical research and/or participation in a basic scientific research program.  Special emphasis is placed on cancer prevention through lectures and practical experiences for students in the health professions for an eight week period.  Applicaitons ar due by February 16, 2010.

The American Osler Society

The William B. Bean Student Research Award is for support of research in the broad areas of medical history and medical humanities. Candidates must be currently matriculated students in approved schools of medicine in the United States or Canada. The successful applicant may be eligible to present a paper based on his or her findings at the annual meeting of the American Osler Society.  Applications must be received by March 1, 2010.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Epidemiology Elective Program gives senior medical students an introduction to preventive medicine, public health, and the principles of applied epidemiology, all under the mentorship of experienced CDC epidemiologists.  Elective students have the opportunity to assist with epidemiologic investigations in many areas, including infectious disease, congenital malformations, enviromental and ocupational diseases, injuries and chronic diseases.  For students entering the program during June-December, applications must be postmarked by March 30th of the junior year.  For those students entering the program during January-May, applications must be postmarked by May 30th of the junior year.
