Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the purpose of the Society?
To recognize and perpetuate excellence and professionalism in the medical profession. - How are members selected?
Here at Creighton School of Medicine, we take great pride in electing outstanding medical students, faculty, alumni, and house staff to the ranks of the Beta Chapter of Nebraska.
- Eligibility: Students are eligible for AOA membership in their third and fourth years. As the society is primary academic, those who are in the top 25% of their class may be considered, but the total number elected may not exceed one-sixth of the graduating class. At Creighton, we elect 4 juniors in spring of their third year, and approximately 16 seniors, who are elected in the fall of their fourth year. Up to 2 faculty, 2 alumni, and 3 house staff are also elected.
- Selection Criteria: Scholastic excellence is a key criterion, but not the only one for election. Leadership, fairness, compassion, integrity, and service are other factors. The chapter members evaluate academic record, volunteer experiences, participation in student groups, and research.
- The Process: The Dean’s office provides a list of the upper quarter of the class (based on the number of honor credits) then the nominating committee (the officers of the chapter) solicits a written application from eligible students. The data is collated and applications are evaluated by the local chapter membership and voted on at the annual meeting
3. What are the rewards of membership?
Election to AOA is a distinction that will accompany you throughout your career. And as a younger physician, you’ll also benefit from the exchange of ideas with your peers and the valuable contacts you make.
