Thank you for your interest in the Creighton University Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship. Athough we are a young fellowship program, formally established in 2005, we offer a strong and solid training experience. We encourage you to consider Creighton University for your subspecialty training.
Program Descripton
Creighton University offers a two-year subspecialty training program for physicians who have completed post-graduate training in an ACGME Internal Medicine Residency Program. The fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and is approved for a total of 3 fellows. In academic years beginning with an even number, the program accepts one new fellow. In academic years beginning with an odd number, the program accepts two new fellows.
Education and Experience
The fellowship is designed to provide advanced training and clinical experience in both ambulatory and inpatient settings. It exposes trainees to all aspects of the subspecialty and prepares them to successfully assume roles as clinicians, educators, and/or investigators. Fellows work closely with the Program Director and other faculty, where open communication and interaction is encouraged.
Fellows are exposed to a wide variety of endocrine and metabolic conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, parathyroid, calcium, vitamin D, and bone disorders. They are assigned to the inpatient consult service, continuity clinics, and specialty clinics. There is minimal call on the Endocrine service. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in the Bone Metabolism, Osteoporosis, and Diabetes Centers that offer a vast array of patient and research activities.
Clinical experience is complimented by a strong academic program that consists of core lectures and conferences by expert faculty. Creighton University is home to internationally recognized educators and researchers who participate in fellowship training.
Fellows assist with teaching activities and serve as a resource and mentor for medical students and house staff rotating on the Endocrine service. They are responsible for organizing and presenting rounds, conferences and Journal Clubs. They participate in research projects and work with a faculty mentor to present and/or publish their findings on a national level.
Training Locations
The principal fellowship training facility is the Creighton University Medical Center, with additional clinical experience at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Children's Hospital. All training facilities are located in Omaha, Nebraska, and are a short driving distance from each other.
ABIM Subspecialty Exam
Graduates of the fellowship program are expected to take the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) subspecialty examination in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases. Fellows participate in in-service training exams and board review sessions during fellowship. Graduates consistently perform well on the board exam and have ample employment opportunities in their subspecialty.
Applications
Fellowship applications are accepted only through ERAS. Applications are for fellowship start dates in July of the following year. The application requires
- Official medical school transcripts
- Official test transcripts for all applicable examinations (USMLE, LMCC, COMLEX, NBOME, FMGEMS, FLEX, or NBME)
- 3 letters of recommendation, one must be from the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director
- A curriculum vitae
- A personal statement
- A valid ECFMG certificate (for graduates from foreign medical schools)
- A photograph
Passage of USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 is required before entering the fellowship program, but is not required at the time of application or interview. Applicants are contacted via e-mail by the Program Director or Coordinator if selected for an interview.
Foreign Medical Graduates
Creighton University School of Medicine postgraduate training programs accept foreign medical graduates or foreighn nationals who are US allopathic or osteopathic medical school graduates on a J-1 or J-2 Visa sponsored by ECFMG. Sponsorship of the H-1B Visa is not available for the graduate medical education programs.
NRMP Specialty Matching Services
Applicants who interview for a fellowship position at Creighton University must register through the Endocrinology Subspecialty Match Program sponsored by the National Resident Matching Program Specialty Matching Services.
Observerships
Creighton University Department of Internal Medicine does not offer or approve subspecialty observership rotations.
