An article by Drs. Zhengyu Cao and Tom Murray of the Department of Pharmacology and collaborators from the Environmental Protection Agency has been featured in the current issue of Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP). With an impact factor of 6.09, EHP is the top monthly journal in public, environmental, and occupational health and the third-ranked monthly journal in environmental sciences. The article entitled “Additivity of Pyrethroid Actions on Sodium Influx in Cerebrocortical Neurons in Primary Culture” found that pyrethroids as a chemical group produce toxicity in mammals via a common mode of action and that the combined toxicity of a pyrethroid mixture reflects the sum of its constituents’ toxicities. Pyrethroid insecticides are used extensively in agriculture and in homes to control fleas, cockroaches, bedbugs, and other insects.
