The Creighton University School of Medicine will receive $952,771 for three biomedical research projects and for student/teacher training opportunities from the National Institutes of Health as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson has announced. The research projects relate to treatments for hearing loss, immunodeficiency, and lymphoid malignancy.
“These funds will help some of Nebraska’s leading research institutions to stay on the forefront of biomedical research. In addition, these grants will provide research opportunities for students who would otherwise not have been able to secure funding,” said Nelson. In all, Nebraska institutions will receive more than $1.5 million from the first round of stimulus payments announced May 27, including University of Nebraska Medical Center, $576,657, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln, $26,724.
Creighton investigators receiving the funds, their awards and project titles are:
- Patrick Swanson, Ph.D., Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, $361,250, “Characterization of V(D)J cleavage and repair complexes”
- Garrett Soukup, Ph.D., Department of Biomedical Sciences, $353,846, “Role of microRNAs in mammalian ear development and neurosensory specification”
- David He, Ph.D., $207,850, Department of Biomedical Sciences, “Regeneration of stereocilia of cochlear hair cells”
- Laura Hansen, Ph.D., $29,825, Department of Biomedical Sciences, “”Student and/or teacher training opportunities”
“These awards represent the first wave with many more to come based on the extraordinary response of Creighton researchers to opportunities for NIH American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding,” said Thomas Murray, Ph.D. associate dean for research at the Creighton University School of Medicine.
