Medical School Match Day – March 19, 2009
Dr. Michael G. Kavan, Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the Creighton University School of Medicine, who oversees the match process of our fourth-year medical students reported that this year was one of the best on record for students matching into their top choices for residency. He noted that 96% of students matched in their area of specialty. A total of 129 students participated (115 in the National Residency Match Program, two in January’s San Francisco Match for Ophthalmology, one in January’s Urology Match, and 11 in December’s Military Match).
Students were matched in 16 different specialty areas. Internal Medicine was by far the most popular specialty with 35 matches, followed by pediatrics (17), general surgery (14), family medicine (11), obstetrics-gynecology (10), anesthesiology (9), emergency medicine (8), and diagnostic radiology, orthopaedic surgery, and pathology with 5 each.
Twelve students were matched with fulltime residency program positions at Creighton University Medical Center and three at University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Students were matched with residencies in 34 states. Outside Nebraska, among the prestigious programs with which students were matched include: Mayo Clinic, Oregon Health Sciences University, Rush University, University of California – Davis, University of California – Irvine, University of California – Los Angeles, University of California – San Diego, University of Southern California, Northwestern McGaw Medical Center, Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Duke University, University of Massachusetts, Thomas Jefferson University, Tufts Medical Center, and more.
