The Dedicated Teacher Award is given to a faculty member who, by long and meritorious teaching of biomedical, behavioral or clinical sciences has left a mark of excellence and provided students with a critical understanding of the faculty member's discipline. Dr. Dale Bergren is this year's recipient of the Dedicated Teacher Award. Dr. Bergren, Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, has been at Creighton since 1985. He has been nominated for the Golden Apple Award over six times, he is the highest ranking instructor in the respiratory systems course, has designed and implemented the Pulmonary Function Laboratory and serves as Course Director of BMS404, Physiology and School of Pharmacy.
Outstanding Mentor Award - Because mentoring is a crucial component of faculty development and faculty retention and an integral part of the collegial atmosphere at Creighton University School of Medicine, the outstanding mentor award is given to a faculty member who has served as an outstanding mentor to other faculty at Creighton University School of Medicine. This year's recipient is Dr. Joann Porter, Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Porter has been at Creighton since 1995. She is a true asset to the Creighton community. She has had a distinguished career at Creighton and has blossomed as an outstanding teacher, clinician and administrator and plays a significant role in mentoring medical students, residents and junior faculty.
Women in Medicine and Science - The Women in Medicine and Science Leadership Award is given to an individual who has supported/brought recognition to WIMS members and activities; provided leadership and mentoring to women faculty at Creighton University School of Medicine; served on WIMS committees, especially in leadership roles and promoted active participation of women faculty in leadership positions. Dr. Martha Gentry-Nielsen, who is unable to be with us tonight, is this year's recipient. Dr. Gentry-Nielsen has been at Creighton since 1990 and is currently a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and Medicine.
