The late James P. Slattery, M.D., who practiced family medicine in Pocahontas, Iowa, for 39 years, has been named the 2012 recipient of the Crystal Caduceus Award, presented by the Creighton University Medical Alumni Advisory Board.

The award is the highest form of recognition given to a Creighton graduate by Creighton medical school alumni. The award is presented periodically to individuals who have brought distinction to themselves, the School of Medicine and the medical profession and who have shown great reverence for community and family.

The award will be presented to Slattery’s widow, Mary Ann, during a May 11 dinner at Creighton Cardiac Center’s Enewold Auditorium. This is only the eighth time the Crystal Caduceus Award has been presented and the first time it has been awarded posthumously.

Slattery, who died Nov. 11, 2011, graduated from the Creighton School of Medicine in 1964. He moved to Omaha after he retired from medical practice.  He was an active leader in both civic and church organizations in his community as well as at Creighton. He and his wife were charter members of the Creighton Parents Club, and seven of their eight children earned Creighton degrees, three of them following their father into the medical profession. Slattery also served on the Creighton School of Medicine Advisory Board and was instrumental in recruiting to Creighton a number of students, who found in him an encouraging mentor and friend.
