The Outstanding Mentor Award is given to a faculty member who has served as an outstanding mentor to other faculty in the School of Medicine.
Mentoring among faculty is a crucial component of faculty development and faculty retention and is an integral part of the collegial atmosphere. While the definition of an outstanding mentor is complex, Dr. Syed Mohiuddin, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine, embodies exactly what every mentor should be. His dedication and expertise in the field of medicine has had an influence on many people throughout the School of Medicine.
It is with great pleasure that the faculty of the School of Medicine presents this award to Dr. Syed Mohiuddin.
Women in Medicine and Science Leadership Award
This award is awarded to a faculty member who has supported and brought recognition to WIMS members and activities; provided leadership and mentoring to women faculty and CUSOM; served on WIMS committees, especially in leadership roles and promoted active participation of women faculty in leadership positions.
Dr. Laura Bruce has a long standing association with Creighton’s chapter of WIMS. She has been a member since the group was founded in 2004. She has been active in the group’s governance, serving on the Steering Committee since 2005 and on the Planning Committee from 2005-2011. She has served as Chair-elect and Chair for a total of four years and is currently serving as Secretary. Dr. Bruce has tirelessly promoted WIMS educational activities and career benefits for the CUSOM women faculty in academic medicine.

Distinguished Professor Award
Dr. Againdra K. Bewtra, Professor of Medicine, is this year’s awardee of the Distinguished Professor Award. The award is designed to recognize the talents and outstanding achievements of a faculty member who has been consistently effective as an inspiring educator with scholarship contributions and service to students and colleagues at CUSOM. Dr. Bewtra, a true credit to Creighton University School of Medicine, is an outstanding teacher, mentor and role model, both personally and professionally, for many of Creighton’s medical students, residents, fellows and graduate students. He is well respected by his colleagues and co-workers.

Dedicated Teacher Award
What is a dedicated teacher? It is someone who displays expert and well-rounded knowledge of their discipline; someone who is distinguished by an unusual gift for teaching; and someone who is dedicated to the technical and intellectual development of their students. Dr. Shailendra Saxena, Associate Professor in the department of Family Medicine since 2000, is an outstanding teacher who shows rare devotion and commitment to the intellectual development of his students.
Over the years, Creighton’s medical students have consistently praised Dr. Saxena. Based on his consistent, sustained and stellar record of teaching throughout his career, the faculty of the School of Medicine hereby award Dr. Saxena with the Dedicated Teacher Award.
Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Cecile Marie Zielinski, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, is the awardee of this year’s Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes a faculty member who has consistently demonstrated commitment o the mission of the School of Medicine through many years of service and sacrifice.
Over Dr. Zielinski’s long career at Creighton University, she has rendered uniquely valuable and dedicated service to the School of Medicine, CUMC and the community at large. She has served unselfishly in a remarkable range of roles from Interim Dean, CMA Board of Directors, President of CUMC medical staff, Associate Chief of Surgery, Interim Chair of Surgery and the list goes on and on.
Dr. Zielinski embodies the principle of Cura Personalis in providing service to all those she comes in contact with. Congratulations Dr. Z!
