Research Interests:
Pathogenesis of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections. I study this infection in the human Fallopian tube organ culture model. Interactions of the bacteria with Fallopian tube epithelial cells are quantified with a unique system that utilizes digital confocal microscopy and computerized image analysis to measure bacterial attachment to and invasion of host cells.
Recently I constructed an E. coli model of the gonococcus by expressing several putative gonococcal virulence factors simultaneously in E. coli. This model can be used in the Fallopian tube organ culture system to determine the roles of these factors alone and together in the pathogenesis of gonococcal salpingitis.
