The ARC-PA has granted Accreditation-Provisional status to the Creighton University Physician Assistant Program sponsored by Creighton University.
Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program’s ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding Accreditation Provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students.
Accreditation-Provisional does not ensure any subsequent accreditation status. It is limited to no more than five years from matriculation of the first class.

Why Become a PA?
Now is an exciting time to join the physician assistant profession. According to US News & World Report, the physician assistant profession ranks #2 on the list of Best Health Care Jobs in America and #3 on the 2019 list of Best Jobs in America. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the median annual salary of PAs at $108,610 and projects that the field are projected to grow 31% from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations.
A PA is a nationally certified and state-licensed medical professional who practices medicine as a member of health care teams with physicians and other providers. PAs practice and prescribe medication in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and in the uniformed services. Graduates of the Creighton PA program will be able to work and communicate effectively as leaders or members of a collaborative health care team to provide culturally competent, evidence-based patient-centered care.
Upon completion of the Creighton University Physician Assistant Program, the graduate will be able to demonstrate competence in the following areas of medical practice:
- Patient care: Provide patient-centered care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health
- Medical knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, and social-behavioral sciences, as well as the application of this knowledge to patient care
- Practice-Based Learning and Improvement: Demonstrate the ability to investigate and evaluate their care of patients, to appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and to continuously improve patient care based on constant self-evaluation and lifelong learning
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, their families, and health professionals
- Professionalism: Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities and an adherence to ethical principles
- Systems-Based Practice: Demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care, as well as the ability to call effectively on other resources in the system to provide optimal health care
The PA program curriculum is a 28-month, two-phase curriculum designed in the medical model. Graduates will be awarded a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) degree.
Phase I: Didactic
The didactic phase of study will include 12 months of integrated, systems-based instruction designed to develop the student’s pre-clinical knowledge base, clinical skills, critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills. Students will apply a biopsychosocial approach to learning patient care with a focus on integrating medical knowledge, clinical problem solving, reflection and communication skills. Phase II: Clinical
The 16-month clinical phase will allow students to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills gained in Phase I in the clinical setting. Students will complete required clinical clerkships in the areas of:
- Family Medicine
- Internal Medicine
- Emergency Medicine
- Women’s Health
Additional elective rotations will give learners an opportunity to tailor their education to their personal educational needs and interests. Creighton University PA students will have the opportunity to take advantage of the Creighton University clinical network, including locations in Omaha and Phoenix, drawing on Creighton’s partnership with Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Maricopa Integrated Health Systems.

How to Apply
The CASPA (Central Application System for Physician Assistants) application cycle opens in April 2020 for applicants who wish to enroll in the program in August of 2021. Applications for the class expected to matriculate in August of 2021 should be made through the Central Application System for Physician Assistants. Applicants may visit the CASPA website for more information. All application materials must be received by CASPA by Sept. 1, 2020.
