Division of Cardiology

Since its founding in 1961, the Creighton University School of Medicine Division of Cardiology has been the leader in the fields of clinical education, cardiovascular research, and the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease.

Key accomplishments for the division include:

  • A three-year clinical cardiovascular fellowship (five fellows/year)
  • A one-year interventional cardiology fellowship (one fellow/year)
  • One of the most extensive experiences with cardiac catheterization through a radial artery approach in the U.S.
  • A world-class computer-assisted arrhythmia monitoring system
  • Dedication to population health with smoking cessation, dietary clinics and cardiac rehabilitation
  • Extensive preclinical and clinical research in the field of cardiovascular medicine

Overview

The faculty provide inpatient and outpatient clinical services at CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center–Bergan Mercy, Immanuel Medical Center, Lakeside Medical Center, Mercy Council Bluffs Medical Center, Midlands Medical Center and the Omaha VA Medical Center. In addition, the faculty travel to 10 different rural hospitals approximately 50 times each month. The general and interventional cardiology fellows, internal medicine residents and medical students interact with faculty in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Inpatient and outpatient academic services are provided at the Bergan Mercy campus and the Omaha VA Medical Center.

The division hosts a bi-monthly journal club and provides regular didactics to the cardiology fellows, internal medicine residents, and family medicine residents; lectures for the medical students; and participates in grand rounds.

The faculty and fellows regularly present abstracts and posters at regional, national and international academic and clinical society meetings. In recognition of their clinical excellence, dedication to education and scholarly activity, the Cardiology Division faculty and fellows have received many Department of Medicine and School of Medicine awards for outstanding performance and scholarly efforts.

Our mission is to continue to be leaders in cardiovascular education and research, to provide the best comprehensive cardiovascular care to our patients and to maintain uninterrupted convenient access to our services for both referring physicians and patients in a cost-effective manner.

The Cardiology Division views itself as an equal partner with referring physicians, other healthcare professionals, the patients and their families in providing highest quality cardiovascular therapy, education and research.
