Message from Michael H. Kim, MD, MMM, FACC, FAHA, FHRS, Professor and Chair
Welcome to the Creighton University Department of Medicine. Creighton has a long history of excellence in the tripartite mission of clinical care, teaching and research. This mission has synergy with the organization’s core values of service to others, leadership and community. You will often hear the phrase “cura personalis” which refers to the care and development of the whole person and serves as a foundation for the department for all learners (students, residents, fellows), faculty, and staff. In addition, Creighton is constantly striving for excellence or “magis”, another core organizational value.
The Department consists of 12 divisions spanning the breadth of internal medicine, a section of clinical research and evaluative sciences, and a program in palliative medicine. There are 120 full-time faculty, 61 contributive services faculty and 114 residents and fellows in our training programs. The Department has expanded the full-time faculty by 25% over the past two years, and there are plans to expand more divisions and fellowship programs in the next several years. Our facilities and resources are significant including a new education building and academic medical center that opened in the summer of 2017. Creighton is partnered with CHI Health, a large health care network and our clinical partner. The partnership between Creighton and CHI is vital to the mission and strategy of our organizations. This alliance creates an outstanding clinical and educational experience for the learner.
As an academic medical center, scholarship and teaching are an integral part of the Creighton mission. The benefits of scholarship for residents and fellows are numerous and include exploration of clinical interests, professional development and interaction with faculty mentors. Training at Creighton will help solidify teaching skills through experiences, including leading medical teams. Our goal is to help learners become outstanding clinicians, educators and scholars that are prepared for academic or private sector careers in primary care or subspecialty based-medicine.
The Omaha, Nebraska region is located in the heart of the Midwest and is a vibrant economic center with four Fortune 500 companies. The population is nearly 1 million and is diverse and growing. Creighton, CHI and the Department of Medicine encourage all to consider joining the team as we continue our mission to serve, heal, educate, learn and advance the field of medicine.
