Cardiovascular Fellowship Program

Cardiovascular Fellowship Program

The purpose of this program is to prepare physicians who already possess a background in internal medicine for a career in cardiovascular medicine.

It is our intention to provide an environment that is suitable for acquiring the following, which are essential to cardiovascular medicine:

  • knowledge
  • skills
  • clinical judgment
  • attitudes
  • values

We feel that a medical cardiologist is a physician who is extremely knowledgeable regarding the differential diagnosis and management of complicated cardiology diseases, and is skilled in laboratory procedures, invasive and noninvasive, employed in cardiovascular diagnosis and research.

Our mission is to produce cardiologists who embody the Ignatian value of “Cura Personalis” in both the learning and clinical practice environment and provide the highest quality cardiovascular care to patients across the region with a focus on clinical excellence, patient safety, and delivering evidence-based medicine in a cost-effective manner.

Our specific goals

  1. Create a workforce of local/regional Cardiologists and Cardiac Subspecialists that will serve in Nebraska / western Iowa and other underserved areas in the Midwest. To serve this, we aim to recruit and retain at least 50% of our trainees to practice in the Midwest and at least 25% of them in Nebraska / Western Iowa. This serves the Institutional goal of creating a workforce that serves local underserved and disadvantaged areas.
  2. Train Cardiologists who deliver highest quality cardiac care by focusing on continuous practice improvement, and advocating for patient safety and quality improvement. To serve this aim, 100% of our graduates will participate in a mentored QI project and at least half of them will present their QI project at the local (GME), regional (Nebraska ACC) or national (ACC) level. This aim aligns with the Institutional goal of creating a culture of continuous quality improvement
  3. Train Cardiologists who demonstrate scholastic excellence through practice of evidence- based medicine, life-long learning, inquiry, and dissemination of new scientific knowledge. Our goal is for >75% of our graduates to have at least one scholarly publication in a peer reviewed journal (excludes case reports) prior to graduation.
  4. To produce physicians who have an understanding of disparities in health care and endeavor to identify and address these disparities so as to improve outcomes in their patients and in their communities. At least 50% of our graduates will graduate with either a scholarly or QI project that addresses disparities in health care, serving in clinic that cares for such patients, or participating in sessions (ACC meeting) that focus health care disparities.
