Dr. Filipi is Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Creighton University School of Medicine. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University, a medical degree at the University of Iowa, and he completed his surgical residency at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. 

He was in private practice for 18 years, then joined the Creighton University faculty. At Creighton, he was a laparoscopic surgery pioneer and developed new endoscopic surgical procedures and devices. He has authored 115 peer reviewed articles, 53 book chapters, is a past president of the Americas Hernia Society, and is a past editor of the World Journal of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery. 

Although retired from surgery, he continues to work as founder of several nonprofits: Hernia Repair for the Underserved (herniahelp.org), which organizes and supports hernia surgical teams and trains in-country surgeons, (chroniccareinternational.org), which treats 1,200 diabetes and hypertension patients in the Dominican Republic, and a food program for 70-75 street children in Ouanaminthe, Haiti. 

Dr. Fililpi created the Creighton University Global Surgery Fellowship with the intent to decrease avertable surgical deaths in developing countries.
